Global Voices: The World is Talking, Are You Listening?

Notes from the Twitterverse

After you’ve signed up for Twitter on the website for the service, there’s no good reason to ever go back to that page.
Social networking gurus have nice things to say about Flock, a Mozilla based browser that’s designed to aggregate feeds and pages from social networking sites and news aggregators, but serious Firefox users already know that much of Flock’s social networking talent is to be found in existing add-ins for the flagship of the Mozilla foundation.

Smart social networking services like Twitter make their programming interfaces (commonly referred to as APIs) available to third parties.
To keep track of Facebook status updates and Twitter postings and to send my own posts I’ve been using The Cosmic Machine’s Eventbox and I’ve signed up for Simon de la Rouviere’s
Tweekly.FM, which merges the Last.FM service which tracks the music you’re playing with Twitter to send out a weekly tweet rating your artist preferences.

In just the last week I’ve been introduced to
WeFollow, a web directory of Twitter users that’s searchable by subject tags.
I’m pretty sure that I haven’t scratched the surface of either Twitter’s possibilities or the potential of the social networking datasphere to surprise and engage.

I asked my little circle of the Twitterverse how and why they use the service...
SanMan_ish: communal IM?
rmsweston: Lovely way to keep up with friends throughout the day, but of course some people get annoyingly addicted and overdo it.
basantam: better than email for swapping thoughts, ideas and getting (almost) immediate feedback
keifel: i get more news, more quickly and accurately than other source
devtee: been using it for the recent ICANN Mexico Summit @ttcs and integrated it on the TTCS website
nplaughlin: My colleague Juliana Rotich aka @afromusing once said: FB is for people you already know, Twitter is for people you want to know.

Then I asked how they connected to Twitter...
hassanvoyeau@macmark: twhirl
sherwinraavi@macmark: twitterfox
SanMan_ish@macmark: tweetdeck, twitterfox and web... have even used the facebook app
hassanvoyeau@macmark: and twitter's mobile website on the blackberry
georgiap@macmark: TweetDeck and sometimes Twhirl. Ping.fm if I want to broadcast to multiple services
izatrini@macmark: tweetdeck, twitterfox and tweetie for iphone
devtee@macmark: webpage mostly, but trying out Spaz and Twhirlabout
rmsweston@macmark: wwwwweb
