Wishing the rains away

Has anyone else experienced this?
You leave the house on a cloudy day, and as soon as you're far enough away from the front door that you can't possibly get back home without getting soaked, the heavens open and a vast deluge pours down.
This, of course, will inevitably happen when you've decided not to bother carrying an umbrella.
Do exactly the same thing with an umbrella in hand and the showers remain curiously in abeyance. Is an umbrella's real power as a talisman against rain and not as a largely ineffectual portable awning?
I can't really get cheesed off at the fickleness of storm clouds though. I replaced the roof over my studio in May and the very afternoon that the last bolt was drilled into place on the last sheet of galvanize, weeks of brooding skies finally ended a punishing dry season with the first light shower of raindrops.
Maybe it's a matter of scale.
