This page links to the online record of and material for Making Mas, a project that I've been commissioned to do for the Trinidad Guardian for Carnival 2008.
The series of single page photo essays tells the story of the unseen people of Carnival, the hundreds of workers who create the thousands of costumes that turn the streets of Trinidad and Tobago into a riot of colour on Carnival Tuesday.
There are seven installments in the series, but a single page for each band really isn't enough space to tell the stories. If you're curious about how this project came together, there's a backgrounder on the series here. I've posted a downloadable video clip (22 mins, 90MB) of an interview with Gayelle's Cock a Doodle Doo about the series and the supporting video of stills I prepared for the appearance. Both are suitable for viewing on a video capable iPod.
On these pages you will find a photo gallery of images from each of the photo shoots that I did for the series along with downloadable PDF files of the pages as they were published. I've also added the stories on their own page along with some excerpts from my notebooks of unpublished quotes. A BitDepth column that looks at my impressions of everything that I experienced doing the series is here.
